Types of Stone SettingsGemstones can either be set in an open or closed setting. Open settings allow light through both ends of a gemstone, while stones set in a closed setting allow light through the top of the stone. This is a good setting for multifaceted gemstones which will refract the most light. Claw SetThe Claw or Prong Setting are used to hold a gemstone securely in place and is usually used for solid gemstones with facets, as light is refracted through the bottom of the stone. Developed in 1886 by Tiffany & Co., it is also referred to as the Tiffany setting. A gemstone set in this way on an engagement ring and other pieces of jewellery will remain eye-catching for years to come.
Pavé SetThis setting requires the craftsmanship of a highly skilled jeweller as it is one of the more challenging setting techniques. Placed in small openings on a flat or curved surface, stones in this setting are positioned side by side and are kept in place by up to six raised spurs. Although many other gemstones use this setting, it is most popular amongst diamonds. Even though each stone used to create this setting is small, the overall effect is extremely elegant.
Channel SetUsed to set stones such as the Baguette and Princess cuts, each gemstone is positioned in a channel side by side which gives of the effect of a keystone. Eternity rings use this setting as each stone is cut to the same size. This look of a continuous line of gemstones is perfect for a round cut.
Rub-over SetCommonly known as a Bezel setting, gemstones in this style are enclosed with a band of precious metal. This setting offers more protection to your gemstone because everyday dirt is stopped from building up on the stone as it is fully surrounded. In more recent years, the Partial Bezel which encloses only part of the gemstone is becoming more popular.
Invisible SettingNamed because of the way gemstones are set to show no metal in between while giving an unbroken finish jewellery pieces. This setting really shows off the elegance of a gemstone. Similar to the Tension setting, rings set in this way are easily adjustable if necessary. The set of a gemstone can define how much light is refracted through it.
