The 4Cs Part 1: Overview

The most common way to assess the quality and value of a diamond is using the 4Cs. The 4 Cs are four criteria that can be used to define the various qualities of a diamond and stand for Cut, Clarity, Colour and Carat. The diamond is assessed based on each of these criteria, and given a value based on its “score” in each area. In the next four posts, we will examine the meaning of cut, clarity, colour and clarity in more detail, showing you what to look for when buying a diamond.

When a diamond is assessed, the ideal is always a high score in all four areas. However this is not often the case – a diamond may have a very good cut, clarity and colour but a low carat weight for example. The value placed on a diamond is based on its balance of cut, clarity, colour and carat – in this way, the 4Cs are used to give a balanced assessment of the diamond and an appropriate price. As we look at each of the 4Cs in greater detail, you will be able to see just how complex each one is, and how they affect the value of an individual diamond.
