September Sapphire Birthstone History

Friday, September 11th, 2009

As we are still in the month of September I thought it would be interesting to give you a brief history of the remarkable September Sapphire birthstone. The Sapphire birthstone is seen as an iconic gemstone, it was one of the first precious stones known to man. Sapphires have been cut and designed for jewellery since ancient times.

The mining of Sapphires first took place in India and Sri Lanka since 7th Century BC. They where found in river beds and streams. In ancient times Sapphires were worn by Kings around the neck as a symbol of protection against harm and to bring good luck.

In the East Sapphires were considered religious, they were used to communicate with various gods. Buddhists believed that the sapphire represented a need to pray. It would also bring spiritual healing. If a person was moral they would have a peaceful and happy life.

In the 12th Century Sapphires were seen as prestigious when Pope Innocent III declared that every Pope should have a ring made of pure gold and containing a precious stone.  He selected a Sapphire because he felt this was befitting a man of his position.

During the Middle Ages September Sapphire Birthstones were said to bring good health and protection from disease. Wearing a Sapphire was supposed to heal you against trouble of the eyes and protecting poison. A person suffering from smallpox would have a Sapphire rubbed on his eyes in order to protect his eyes from the disease.

Throughout our history the September Sapphire Birthstones have played vital roles in many different cultures and through the years have gained different meanings; some are good luck, good health and high class.
