The wearing of charm bracelets has been around for centuries.

Charms were originally used as a form of amulet to bring good luck or as a protection against evil spirits.  In Ancient Egypt a person wore a charm as a show of faith towards their gods and it was also supposed to identify them to the gods in their afterlife.

Medieval knights wore charms as a protection in battle and a memory of their loved ones back home.

More recently charm bracelets became highly fashionable when Queen Victoria was presented with a charm bracelet.  She liked it so much that she had many made for her and because of this was affectionately known as the Charm Queen.

It was during the Second World War that charm bracelets became really popular around the world.  Troops were posted to many foreign posts and they would buy gifts for the family back home.  Often these were made into charms and worn as a keepsake by the soldiers loved ones. Charm bracelet souvenirs were extremely popular due to variety of the trinkets available (usually wooden carvings or beaten tin to represent different objects) and the size of the bracelet perfect to carry home.

After World War II, charm bracelets became extremely popular with teenage girls and especially in America where you could purchase a cheap charm from gumball machines.  Since then charm bracelets have been fashionable amongst teens and remain a great fashion item to this day. Charms are a lovely way to mark special occasions and make a great gift. One charming idea is to give young children a charm bracelet with just one charm. Then as the years pass family members can add a charm until the child has a beautiful keepsake that can be passed down to their own children.
