As its still August I thought I would give you more information on this month’s beautiful peridot birthstone. I have already mentioned in my previous post  Mysterious Peridot- August’s Birthstone, how this gemstone became popular due to its healing powers and association with good luck. Whilst holding significant magical importance, the peridot birthstone became widely popular due to its stunning green variation in colour.

Often associated with emeralds, this precious gem has been fashionable and popular for decades. The peridot birthstone has been worn and owned by kings and Queens! Since the book of Exodus states that one of the twelve stones of the High-Priest’s breastplate was Peridot. Similarly King Esekiel supposedly had an impressive Peridot.

As the birthstone has been mined for an estimated 400 years, there have been a number of influences that helped to popularize the gem. The Ancient Egyptians called the Peridot ‘the gem of the sun’. Their main source of the birthstone was the island of Topazo, today this is called St. Johns Island.

Owned exclusively by the Egyptians, the Pharaohs regarded the stone as prestigious and wanted as many as possible for their treasury. The Egyptians believed that the stone gave off its own radiance and could be seen at night, they ultimately made Slaves work all day and night to collect the peridot. The island was guarded and any trespassers where immediately put to death!

The gemstones where mined on the island of Topazo for  almost 3500 years. The Egyptians kept this a secret from the rest of the world. The precious stone is difficult to find and was lost in history for centuries.  Many historians now believe that Cleopatra wore Peridot instead of Emeralds. She is famous for always wearing green stoned jewellery.

Hawaiian natives believed that the Goddess Pele’s tears created the peridot gemstone. During a 600 yea reign, the Ottoman Sultans collected an over whelming amount of birthstones, numbering in thousands. They made them in to fashionable jewellery.
