An oblong blue diamond set in a platinum ring weighing 7.03 carats was sold at Sotheby’s on Tuesday for a staggering £6.2 million, which is the highest price ever paid for a diamond. The previous record breaker was a blue diamond ring weighing 6.04 carats which sold for £5.2 million in Hong Kong in 2007. This incredible ring clears the previous record by a cool million pounds – an impressive jump even if we weren’t in the midst of a recession.

The blue diamond ring was purchased by an anonymous bidder who will have the honour of naming this show-stopping diamond. This diamond ring is unusual in that round diamonds typically fetch the highest prices, but it seems oblong diamonds are once again becoming popular.
